Germany
Editor’s Selection · Selected by Sunjae Sharmah

A German-made hand grinder, built around a steel burr and an oak knob.

Comandante is a German brand registered in 2012 by Bernd Braune and based near Munich. Its own account dates grinder production to 2013. The C40 is its hand grinder: the Mk3 version appeared in 2016 and the Mk4 in autumn 2021.

On the maker’s product page, the Mk4 Nitro Blade is described as using a Nitro Blade burr made from Nitro Rex steel, a stainless steel with more than 17% chromium plus vanadium and molybdenum. The bean jar holds 40 g of coffee and is offered in polymer or glass versions, and the crank carries an oak knob. The grinders are made in Germany.

Specifications can differ between editions and colours, so the maker’s website is the place for current details.
